Following the increase to women’s State Pension Age in 2010, the WASPI campaign group was formed in 2015; in their own words, the WASPI campaign is:

“Fighting for justice for all women born in the 1950s (on or after 6th April 1950 to 5th April 1960) affected by the changes to the State Pension Age (SPA). WASPI is not against equalisation, but we do not accept the unfair way the changes to our SPA were implemented with inadequate or no notice.”

Despite the backing of some MPs and media coverage, as well as the Parliamentary and Health Ombudsman’s initial findings being in favour of the WASPI group, saying that there were failures in communicating the rise in women’s state pension age, the government are still to discuss a compensation package for these women and haven’t met with WASPI representatives since 2016.

It’s forecast that 36,000 women will die this year without receiving any compensation and that the changes to State Pension Age have cost the women an average of £108 per week.
