Authorised unpaid leave
For any periods of authorised unpaid leave, you stop paying pension contributions, so you don’t build up any pension. But you do have the option to buy back the amount of lost pension by paying additional pension contributions (APCs). Your employer will pay 2/3rds of the cost if you buy back the amount within 30 days of returning to work.
Unauthorised unpaid leave
For any periods of unauthorised unpaid leave, you stop paying pension contributions, so you don’t build up any pension. You’re still able to buy back the amount of lost pension by paying additional pension contributions (APCs), but your employer won’t contribute to the cost.
